Keeping a marriage together is a task that should not be out of obligation, but should be done because of the love and respect each partner has for each other. While courtship, marriage then divorce seem to be a regular stage in a person’s life, this could be totally eradicated. Being married for 3 decades or more should not be seen as triumph but a necessity.

But still, there are many other factors that dictate the success and smooth flow of a married relationship.

You have to find out the reason behind it. It could be anything you are not aware of. To find out the reason first and foremost the best way is to talk it out. To communicate to your partner is a good way out rather than making assumptions. If you assume on your own and feel maybe because of this or that he /she is not interested then you could be wrong. Talk, talk and just talk.

Marriage is a self-improvement project

Marriage is the start line not the finish line. You thought you could give up and veg out once you've landed that big fish husband of yours? You think you can slob around now you've got a ring on that gorgeous girl's finger? Perish the thought! Carry with you the intention to do better today than you did yesterday. Improve upon the way you interact with your life partner.

What we need to do is recognize each other’s needs and always aim for fair play. What is the refrain from childhood that you probably still hear in your mind today? It’s “That’s not fair!!” All any child wants is to be treated fairly. We tend to forget this after we marry, and become complacent in our life, with our mate.

Taking the leap I did set my life on a new trajectory. It's what I needed to do at that time in my life to honor the dreams I had for my life. Taking a familiar road would have resulted in "more of the same". BUT, my heart and soul didn't want more of the same, my heart and soul wanted different.

Another important ingredient to a good marriage is humor. This may sound funny (pardon the pun) but humor can really help a marriage. Laughter can easily help break the ice. Cracking a joke can also help calm a volatile situation. If you know how to share a laugh with your better half, then you know that you can get through anything.
