Time Management Skills

By click for at 2009-05-20 05:16:15
Have you ever felt like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland? Rushing from one thing to the next with no time to rest or relax? If so, perhaps what you need is some time management.

This little technique is the ONLY thing you need to master if you want to reach all your goals with minimum work and free up your valuable time.

As entrepreneurs we all struggle sometimes with managing our time effectively. I once heard an entrepreneur say that of the people he knows, his entrepreneur friends are the worst people when it comes to managing their time and priorities. Too often we fall prey to the misguided notion that being busy is the same as making progress.

I wouldn't have been offended if he had just quietly explained to me that he hadn't got the time to stop and chat during the day, and that we should arrange a time to meet after work. But he didn't and so, at that time, I knew no better.

From identifying priorities to organizing systems, from handling interruptions to managing others, these tips will help you master the powerful and empowering skill in time management

The second component is to stick to your schedule and communicate to others when you are available for them and when you are not. If this seems unrealistic or impractical, that is because you have never tried it! In the long run, your boss with be impressed that you are getting more done, you will have more quality time to prevent most of your clients’ crises, and your coworkers will learn that you are not at their beck and call.

The third focus in setting your work priorities is to become an expert at your job. Being an expert is going beyond academics and entering into the real world of your business. Keeping up with trends, competitors, market and demographic changes are critical areas where you should strive to be regarded as an expert.

The time spent working by employees who telecommute or those who work remotely are also easier to monitor when a more efficient means of tracking is used. Electronic systems allow employees to log on using their computers and thus get the time they spent working recorded and monitored. This may be done using Internet-based and telephone-based systems. Some systems can even make use of wireless connection using smartphones or PDAs.

Another excellent time tracking software you can try is Track-IT. It boasts plenty in the functionality department but it's surprisingly low-cost. This is the perfect choice for businesses that continue to expand, since it can be utilized for individual or multiple users. It also offers seamless operation for multiple projects and can produce different types of invoices and reports.

One of the best ways our new manager can get feedback on his team would be to ask their customers—either internal or external customers. If the manager lets the customers know his expectations of his team and gains an understanding of the customers’ expectations, he can solicit feedback on the performance of each individual over time. After all, the customer ought to be the focal point of all activity, and the new manager can’t be satisfied with managing to his expectations, exclusively, especially if they are not congruent with the customers’ expectations.
